Beach Activities
Comprised of volcanic black sand this safe surf beach is patrolled in summer so it’s great and safe for swimmers and surfers. You can even find large rock pools on the north-west end of the beach at low tide.

Surfing
Opunake is known as the “Home of the Big Wave” and is located on a sheltered and sandy bay on the Surf Highway 45, New Zealand’s only dedicated surf touring route. This is where the tumultuous waves of the Tasman Sea meet Mt Taranaki (Mt Egmond). Opunake also features an artificial surf reef and numerous surf events throughout the year.
Fishing
Opunake is a great fishing spot with plenty of room for your boats and trailers!
Walk Ways
The Opunake walkway and scenic lake is close to the Holiday Park offering stunning views of the coastline and Mount Taranaki. You are also close to the fantastic walking tracks of Egmont National Park.

Tramping, Hiking and Huts
From the visitor centre there are wonderful day walks and overnight tramps to nearby huts. DOC (Department of Conservation) staff is available from Wednesdays to Sunday to offer information on the walks and weather conditions.

The colourful murals of Opunake have become famous icon for the township. Drive through Opunake and you'll find a quiet coastal town with decorative stone walls, faded shop facades, friendly locals and a distinctive surfie character. It is a great little place to discover.
Dawson Falls
This stunning waterfall is located in Hawera (40 minutes away), within walking distance of the Dawson Falls Visitor Centre in Egmont National Park. You can also visit a rare working example of a simple hydro-electric power station.

Golf
Opunake golf club is located 3 km north of Opunake. A challenging 18 hole par 71 course, 5039 meters. Opunake offers golfers a hospitable welcome and a true country experience with fairway mowing complemented by sheep grazing the course. Opunake Beach Holiday Park have clubs available to hire.
